STRABISM SURGERY

Strabismus surgery, also known as eye alignment surgery, is a procedure aimed at correcting the deviation of the eyes caused by strabismus.

Typically, this condition occurs when the eye muscles do not work in sync, leading to crossed or deviated gaze.

Here is a general overview of the surgical process:

1. Preliminary Evaluation:
- The ophthalmological surgeon performs a complete evaluation of the alignment of the eyes, determining the cause of the strabismus and the amount of correction needed.

2. Anesthesia:
- Strabismus surgery can be performed with general or local anesthesia, depending on the circumstances and patient preferences.

3. Regulation of the Eye Muscles:
- During surgery, the surgeon changes the length or tension of the eye muscles involved in strabismus.
- This may involve strengthening or relaxing muscles to achieve better eye alignment.

4. Closing the Incision:
- The incision is closed with stitches if necessary.

5. Recovery and Recovery:
- The patient is monitored during the recovery phase from anesthesia.
- The recovery period may vary, but many people return to normal daily activities within a few days.

It is important to note that surgery can be complementary to other therapies, such as the use of glasses, patches or vision exercises. In some cases, subsequent surgeries may be necessary to optimize the alignment of the eyes.

The decision to undergo strabismus surgery must be made by consulting an ophthalmologist surgeon specialized in strabismus who, to measure the extent of the deviations to be corrected, will consult with his orthoptist (ophthalmology assistant) also considering the specific risks and benefits for each patient.
